Collyweston Re-Slate For Grade II Listed Manor House In Northamptonshire
Before

This beautiful Grade II Listed Manor House, now Farm House has been part of one of the prettiest Northamptonshire villages since 1670, possibly earlier with indications within the property to 1593 upon its beams and is mentioned in the Domesday book.
A section of the Farm House’s front Collyweston roof had reached the end of its serviceable life and Heritage Roofing Services were instructed to complete the re-slating.

The Re-Slating Process
As you can see from the photos documenting the journey through the re-slating process, the team begin by carefully removing the existing Collyweston slate (shown above) and they retain all of the slate that can be re-used again on the roof. Once the roof is back to its rafters, insulation is then added. High quality felt and tanalised batten are used to create a watertight working surface. While the roof is going through this part of the transformation, the Collyweston slate is being prepared to be re-laid.

Hand Dressing Of The Slates By Highly Skilled Professionals
Each Collyweston slate is meticulously ‘dressed’ by a skilled traditional Collyweston Slater – this ensures that each slate is sound, shaped and re-holed ready to be re-laid on the roof. We use extra high quality re-claimed Collyweston slate to ensure the roof has the correct amount of slate on it for its size, with the correct overlap of slate to ensure it is watertight and will stand the test of time for many, many years to come.
Meticulous Attention To Detail
Incredible detail goes into the Collyweston roof, from the angle the slates are laid, to the traditional lime mortar mix that is used to bed the slate and ensure water flows off of the roof and is not held on the roof, causing damage to the newly slated roof. Traditional Collyweston Hog Back ridge tiles are used to complete the roof area. As you can see from the finished photos – the Collyweston slate has returned to its glowing limestone colour, and beautiful straight shadow lines from the suns rays highlight the skill and detail our Collyweston slaters achieve with every Collyweston roof they complete.
