Heritage Roofing recently completed the full restoration of a picturesque Collyweston slate turret roof on a historic property in the village of Morton, near Bourne. The turret, one of two marking the gateway to the home, had suffered extensive weathering over time. In particular, the left turret had reached a stage where re-slating was essential to protect the structure and maintain its heritage value.

Assessment & Preparation

During our initial inspection, we identified loose slates from the inside and visible holes on the external surface of the roof. As a result, it was clear that a full restoration was required. To begin, we carefully stripped the Collyweston slate turret roof back to its original timber structure. Once the frame’s integrity was confirmed, we proceeded to install new tanalised battens, providing a strong, rot-resistant foundation for the new slating.

Traditional Craftsmanship with Collyweston Slate

Wherever possible, the original Collyweston slate – an iconic local material – was retained and re-used. Each piece was hand-dressed with precision, then laid in traditional circular courses, moving steadily up the curved turret. To ensure both authenticity and performance, we used breathable lime mortar, allowing the roof to flex naturally while staying true to historic building techniques.

Meanwhile, to protect the delicate slates during the installation process, we employed straw bags. This is a time-honoured method to prevent damage as the work progressed upward.

Finishing Touches

Finally, the restoration was topped off with a beautifully crafted lead “hat” to cap the turret. Not only did this provide a watertight seal, but it also added an elegant architectural detail that pays homage to the original design.
