Complete Roof re-slate of Bainton House with Collyweston Slate

Heritage Roofing Services in Stamford have recently had the pleasure of woking on this absolutely stunning property above. Located in Cambridgeshire, this picturesque and historic listed building was in need of a little TLC. So they called in the roofing experts who specialise in unique projects like this. The requirements for this project were extensive, including a complete re-slate. With projects like this, the job needs to be carried out by experts, so the job is done correctly. Along with being completed with the right methods in keeping with the nature of the building, so it will stand the test of time.
What Work Needed To Be Undertaken?
The Collyweston slate roof of this impressive home had stood the test of time for over 80 years. But had reached the end of its natural lifespan. Firstly, the roof required considerable timber work (completed by Brown and Jones Ltd). Due to this the Collyweston slate roof also needed to be stripped by hand and insulated up to current legislation. The team spend considerable time planning the roof layout, taking into account the contour of the roof, the dips and bows of an old roofs shape, and planning the courses to re-lay the slates, to accommodate these historic characteristics.
The Re-Slating Process
The roof had bat activity, so our usual high quality felt could not be used on the roof. Once the relevant permissions had been granted we used TLX Batsafe Felt (we like to use TLX Gold felt and insulation generally as it is a thermal product and breathable membrane in one). The team saved as much of the existing Collyweston slate as they could, taking the time to re-dress by hand the 150 million year old slates (with plenty of life left in them – how many materials available today can say that!) individually, into their 28 different sizes, ready for re-use on the roof – retaining the history of the property. Additional re-claimed slate, from our own stock, was used to blend seamlessly in with the existing slate, ready to protect the family within for the next 100 years.
Staying True To Traditional Methods
We use traditional lead methods specifically for flashings, dormers, and saddles in the lace turned valleys. Traditional lime mortar is used for all pointing work to the floated verges and ridge bedding. New lead box gutters were installed by the team, with hand-dressed lead to the coping stones, ensuring excellent water flow away from the roof and into new Alutech aluminium guttering – suitable for use on Listed Buildings.
All original features of the roof have been retained. From the Collyweston hog back ridge tiles to the Putt Devil Eyes (as can be seen in the above image), to keep the evil spirits away.
